THE HIGHLIGHTS OF A HOLIDAY AT HUTTOPIA ARCACHON CAMPSITE

Go and explore the Ville d’Hiver (Winter Town) in Arcachon, a paradise of eccentric architecture, only around ten minutes on foot from the campsite.

Enjoy a seafood platter in one of Arcachon Bay’s many oyster shacks. On the menu, you’ll find oysters, prawns and other shellfish, and don’t forget a glass of white wine for an authentic local dining experience.

Head to Arcachon’s beautiful beaches, just a few kilometres from the campsite. In the summer, you can spend time swimming and sunbathing on the sand. And in winter, there’s nothing like breathing in the salty ocean air on a walk along the port.

NEAR THE CAMPSITE

Many shops are available to you near the campsite. Less than 15 minutes away on foot, you will find bakeries, chemists, a post office, supermarkets and more. In the evening, follow Boulevard de la Plage and its small parallel streets, and let yourself be tempted by one of the many restaurants situated there (a 10-minute bike ride from the campsite).

Cycling in the Landes

The Landes Forest is a fabulous playground for nature lovers, with infinite spaces for you to explore by bike. Just before Biscarrosse-Plage, the Velodyssey cycling route passes from the Gironde to the Landes via Arcachon.

Mushroom picking and hiking in the forest

In the autumn, the surrounding woodland takes on beautiful coppery colours that are wonderful to admire on a walk with the family. During that time, the Lanton and Arès Forests are perfect spots for gathering mushrooms. The tourist information centre in Arès organises outings in September and October, led by an expert mushroom guide.

Beaches in the region

Winter is the best time to explore the bay in absolute peace and quiet. It’s also the season when the Dune du Pilat is at its wildest. Enjoy the solitude of the beaches by the bay, following the rhythm of the tides, try your hand at foraging for shellfish and stop to appreciate the fantastic, magical light of the winter sun on your face.

A rainy day is a great opportunity to spend some time with a good book. If you didn’t think to bring one with you, just head over to the Central Lodge to borrow one from our book shelves.

Take advantage of the weather to get off your feet and visit the town on board Arcachon’s covered tourist train. You can learn all about Arcachon’s architectural heritage and its gorgeous 19th century villas, or else opt for the Panoramic tour to get an eyeful of breathtaking views. All the while, an audio guide will ensure you don’t miss a thing! Would you like to move to higher ground? Then make your way to the Cap Ferret Lighthouse for a tour of its interactive museum.

The wonders of Arcachon Bay

The vast Landes Forest, Arcachon Bay and the Atlantic Ocean

Long beaches covered in white sand, majestic sunsets, pine forests, fishing huts, salt meadows, dunes and the ocean as far as the eye can see… These are just some of the unique and varied sights afforded by Arcachon Bay, a lagoon with many different landscapes. At Huttopia Arcachon Campsite, you are ideally located to explore the entire bay and all of its treasures.

Discover the charm and sweetness of life in the Silver Coast’s most iconic bay, extending from the Dune du Pilat to the Cap Ferret peninsula, in this lovely southwestern part of France bordered by the Atlantic.

The Dune of Pilat

12 km

Climb to the top of this amazing natural monument – the highest dune in Europe – and marvel at its Sahara-like scenery and its superb views of the ocean and the forest. Each season, the sight from atop the dune is different… but always just as breathtaking!

The huts on stilts at the Ile aux Oiseaux

2 km

In the middle of Arcachon Bay, the Ile aux Oiseaux is a small, wild paradise that is home to no fewer than 150 species of birds. You can visit it on board a small boat departing from the piers in Arcachon. This listed site is also known for its two huts on stilts, absolute must-sees when visiting the bay.

The Banc d’Arguin

15 km

The Banc d’Arguin Nature Reserve is one of the many gems of Arcachon Bay. This sandbank, the largest one on the Gironde coastline, with its shape that changes under the influence of the wind, makes you feel like you’ve come to the end of the world. Here, nature reigns supreme, with protected species, shellfish and crystal clear waters. Heavenly!

Cap Ferret and its villages

70 km by car / 12 km by ferry

A trip to the Cap Ferret peninsula, extending nearly 25 kilometres between the bay and the coast, is an absolute must. From Arcachon, cross the bay by boat and be sure to stop for lunch at one of the huts by the water’s edge, where you can enjoy seafood and local white wines. Our favourite spot: the village of L’Herbe, the peninsula’s most beautiful hamlet.

Arcachon’s winter district

1 km

Among Arcachon’s different districts, named after the four seasons, Ville d’Hiver (Winter Town) is well worth the detour. Go for a meander through the narrow streets of this picturesque neighbourhood on the heights of Arcachon. There, you can admire the whimsical architecture of beautiful historical villas and the views of the bay from Sainte-Cécile Observatory.

Teich Bird Reserve

17 km

A preserved natural environment, this wild bird sanctuary was created in 1972 and is open to members of the general public who are interested in observing nature. A bucolic escapade along the reserve’s trails, between meadows, reed beds, lagoons and marshes. Don’t forget to stop by the welcome centre to borrow a pair of binoculars!

Lake Cazaux and Sanguinet

Although the Landes is particularly well-known for its ocean coastline, it is also popular for its many lakes, which offer calmer, more secluded sites to visit. In the Landes Great Lakes region, take the time to explore Lake Cazaux and Sanguinet. This 5,500 hectare body of fresh water is ideal for avid fishermen and families looking for a change of scenery.

Bordeaux

65 km

A trip to Bordeaux is a must when visiting the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. A listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bordeaux is particularly popular for its historic city centre and its monuments. Of course, as a culinary city and the world capital of wine, you can sample canelé pastries there as well as Bordeaux wines at the Cité du Vin wine museum.

Pony rides

350 metres from the campsite, at the Centre Equestre d’Arcachon, your little ones will have a ball riding a pony through the forest or along the beach.

La Coccinelle

10 kilometres from the campsite, treat your kids to a day at this wildlife and amusement park in Gujan Mestras.

Arcamômes children’s festival

On Wednesday evenings in the summertime, head to the Parc Mauresque for a programme of outdoor shows tailored to children aged 4 to 10 (featuring theatre, magic, circus acts, music and more).
