Go and explore the Ville d’Hiver (Winter Town) in Arcachon, a paradise of eccentric architecture, only around ten minutes on foot from the campsite.

Enjoy a seafood platter in one of Arcachon Bay’s many oyster shacks. On the menu, you’ll find oysters, prawns and other shellfish, and don’t forget a glass of white wine for an authentic local dining experience.

Head to Arcachon’s beautiful beaches, just a few kilometres from the campsite. In the summer, you can spend time swimming and sunbathing on the sand. And in winter, there’s nothing like breathing in the salty ocean air on a walk along the port.

Many shops are available to you near the campsite. Less than 15 minutes away on foot, you will find bakeries, chemists, a post office, supermarkets and more. In the evening, follow Boulevard de la Plage and its small parallel streets, and let yourself be tempted by one of the many restaurants situated there (a 10-minute bike ride from the campsite).

NATURE AND LOCAL FLAVOURS IN EVERY SEASON

At Huttopia Arcachon, each season reveals a unique facet of the Atlantic coastline.

In spring, the pine forests come alive and the first oysters from the local oyster farmer make their appearance.

In summer, the sandy beaches of Andernos-les-Bains, Arès and Lanton welcome swimmers and those keen to forage for cockles and clams at low tide.

In autumn, the forests of Lanton and Arès turn copper-toned — the perfect season to head out mushroom picking for ceps and chanterelles with a mycology guide.

In winter, the Dune du Pilat reclaims its wild grandeur and the Vélodyssée cycling route can be enjoyed in absolute calm, between pine forests and low-angled light over the basin.

Cycling in the Landes — the Vélodyssée from the Bassin d'Arcachon

Hop on your bike and set off to explore the Landes forest, one of the largest forested areas in Europe. On the agenda: shaded cycle paths, the scent of pine resin and the Vélodyssée, the coastal cycling route linking the Gironde to the Landes along Arcachon and Biscarrosse-plage.

Mushroom foraging and forest walks — guided outings in Lanton and Arès

In autumn, the forests of Lanton and Arès are draped in copper hues and yield their hidden treasures: ceps, chanterelles and other wild mushrooms.

In September and October, the Arès Tourist Office organises family outings accompanied by a mycology guide — the ideal walk to introduce children and adults alike to the Landes forest.

AND WHAT CAN WE DO IF IT RAINS?

A rainy day can be the perfect opportunity to slow down, curl up with a novel borrowed from the campsite library, or head out to explore the heritage of the basin.

Le P'tit Train d'Arcachon — 1 km from the campsite

Hop aboard this little covered train for a guided tour of Arcachon’s Ville d’Hiver, a Belle Époque neighbourhood of eclectic 19th-century villas conceived under Napoléon III — who made Arcachon an “Imperial Town” in 1857.

In 2026, a single circuit of approximately 45 minutes is on offer, taking in the Ville d’Hiver, the Pereire neighbourhood and evoking the Emperor’s visits.

Commentary is available in French, English, German, Spanish and Italian.

Open from 1 April to 31 October.

Le Phare du Cap-Ferret — 7 km from the campsite

For a bird’s-eye view, head to the Cap-Ferret lighthouse and climb its 258 steps to reach a 360° panorama over the ocean, the peninsula and the Bassin d’Arcachon, at 57 metres high. Inside, 6 themed spaces trace the history of maritime cartography, navigation on the basin and lighthouses around the world, including an interactive room where you can virtually sail across the basin.

Visit duration: approximately 45 minutes.

Open afternoons only in autumn-winter (approx. 2pm–5pm).

La Maison de l'Huître — 15 km from the campsite (Gujan-Mestras)

The perfect way to extend the oyster experience in a covered, educational setting. Located in the port of Larros in Gujan-Mestras, the oyster capital of the Bassin d’Arcachon, La Maison de l’Huître traces the oyster farmer’s craft, farming techniques and the history of the oyster through the centuries.

The one-hour visit unfolds in three stages: a film available in English, Spanish and German, a guided tour of the themed rooms, and then an outdoor trail through the port of Larros.

Open year-round Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 12:30pm and 2:30pm to 6pm.

In July and August, also open on Sundays.

Le Bunker 502 — 1 km from the campsite (Arcachon)

A renovated Second World War relic offering an immersive experience, this bunker lets you explore the underground corridors that served as a German headquarters on the Atlantic coast, with exhibitions of period objects and military artefacts.

Located within the MA.AT in Arcachon, less than 10 minutes’ walk from the campsite — ideal when the rain arrives unexpectedly.

Around Huttopia Arcachon Campsite, a host of family activities allow you to discover the Bassin d’Arcachon with ease: supervised beaches, cycling trips, the Dune du Pilat, forest walks, nature outings, oyster harbours and visits suited to both young and old.

Pony rides — 350 m from the campsite

The Arcachon equestrian centre welcomes children to discover the joys of horse riding in a forest setting, in the heart of Arcachon.

The centre offers lessons, courses and equestrian activities for all ages, as well as forest trail rides.

An easy-to-access nature activity from the campsite, ideal for introducing children to ponies during the holidays.

Information and booking recommended directly with the Arcachon equestrian centre.

Beach outings are subject to specific conditions and may not be suitable for very young children.

Parc de la Coccinelle — 10 km from the campsite

In Gujan-Mestras, the Parc de la Coccinelle is a must-visit family outing in the Bassin d’Arcachon.

This animal park and amusement park features a mini farm where children can get close to the animals, stroke them and take part in bottle-feeding baby goats, lambs and calves.

On the rides side, there is plenty to enjoy, including the Splash River, the Mine Train, the Galloping Horses and other attractions tailored to children.

Arcamômes, the children's festival — in Arcachon

Every Wednesday evening in summer, Arcamômes transforms the open-air theatre of the Parc Mauresque in Arcachon into an outdoor stage for children and families.

On the programme: circus, magic, song, theatre, comedy and live performances in a leafy setting in the heart of the Ville d’Hiver.

Free and convivial, this event is a wonderful evening outing from Huttopia Arcachon Campsite.

The Bassin d’Arcachon is part of a marine nature park covering 435 km², bordering 10 municipalities and encompassing 144 km of coastline. Nearby, the Dune du Pilat — the tallest coastal dune in Europe — stretches 2.9 km in length and peaks at 101 m. With more than 330 km of cycle paths, the region is easily explored by bike, between Arcachon, La Teste-de-Buch, Gujan-Mestras, Le Teich and Lège-Cap-Ferret.

NATURAL SITES AROUND THE BASSIN D’ARCACHON

La Dune du Pilat

12 km

The tallest dune in Europe, the Dune du Pilat is the iconic natural landmark of the Bassin d’Arcachon. From its summit, the panorama opens up over the basin, the Banc d’Arguin, the Atlantic Ocean, the Landes forest and the Cap Ferret peninsula. An unmissable visit to understand the relationship between dune, ocean, forest and lagoon along the Côte d’Argent.

Les Cabanes tchanquées

2 km

Built on stilts off the Île aux Oiseaux, the Cabanes Tchanquées are one of the most iconic symbols of the Bassin d’Arcachon. They can be admired from the boat during trips to the Île aux Oiseaux, the oyster parks and Cap Ferret. Their silhouette is one of the most recognisable images of the basin.

Le Banc d’Arguin

Located at the entrance to the Bassin d’Arcachon, facing the Dune du Pilat and Cap Ferret, the Banc d’Arguin is a vast natural sandbank shaped by tides and currents. It is the largest sandbank on the Gironde coastline, reaching approximately 4 km in length and 2 km in width at low tide. A major site for observing the ever-changing landscapes of the basin and the ocean.

Île aux Oiseaux

In the heart of the Bassin d’Arcachon, the Île aux Oiseaux is one of the most emblematic landscapes in the region. It is best discovered from the water, during boat trips around the oyster parks, the Cabanes Tchanquées and the basin’s channels. An essential place to understand the natural, maritime and oyster-farming identity of the Bassin d’Arcachon.

Prés Salés Ouest de La Teste-de-Buch

The Prés Salés Ouest are among the remarkable sites listed by the La Teste-de-Buch Tourist Office. This natural area offers a glimpse of the wetland landscapes of the Bassin d’Arcachon, with salt meadows, footpaths, birdlife and tidal environments. An easy nature outing to include during a stay in Arcachon.

Lac de Cazaux

The Lac de Cazaux is one of the remarkable sites of La Teste-de-Buch. This large freshwater lake, bordered by forest, offers a calmer landscape than the ocean coastline. It is popular for swimming, walking, gentle water sports and family nature days, between freshwater, pine forest and Landes atmosphere.

Accessible primarily by car, or by bike for sporty cyclists.

La réserve ornithologique du Teich

Located in the heart of the Bassin d’Arcachon and the Leyre delta, the Ornithological Reserve of Le Teich is one of the best sites in the Gironde for birdwatching. The visit is done on foot along a 6 km loop trail, with 20 observation hides, for an estimated duration of around 4 hours. Between marshes, reed beds, meadows and lagoons, the reserve is home to over 300,000 migratory birds and nearly 300 observable species.

Accessible by car, by train to Le Teich station then on foot, or by bike for experienced cyclists.

Plages océanes de La Teste-de-Buch

The ocean beaches of La Teste-de-Buch — such as Petit Nice, la Lagune, Salie Nord and Salie Sud — allow you to discover the Atlantic side of the area. They offer vast sandy expanses, dune landscapes and a wilder atmosphere than the basin beaches. The ideal option for enjoying the ocean, the waves and the panoramas between pine forest and Atlantic coast.

Accessible by car, by bike for experienced cyclists, or by bus depending on the season.

Port ostréicole de La Teste-de-Buch

5-6 km

The oyster harbour of La Teste-de-Buch is one of the remarkable sites identified by the local Tourist Office. Between huts, boats, tastings and maritime activity, it illustrates the relationship between the tides, oyster farming and the identity of the Bassin d’Arcachon. A place combining nature and heritage, perfect for rounding off a discovery of the Southern Basin.

Accessible by bike, car or by train to La Teste then on foot.
